Can an elected officer attend their first meeting before being sworn in?
Dear Susan,
Do your bylaws state that an officer has to be sworn in to take office? Look at your bylaws to see when the officer takes the position. If it says the officers takes office at a certain date then that is when they take office. Often people have an installation ceremony but that does not make them an officer or take the position of officer, it is the election. The Constitution of the US states that the person elected president must take an oath of office before he begins his work, but usually organizations do not require such a thing. So if the officer takes his position before the first meeting then he can attend.
Cheerio,
Little Ben
